As its name implies, cold water tanks require no heating in place. This reduces costs when creating your first tank. It also makes the aquarium much easier to maintain over the long term. Keep in mind that only some water fish cold can survive in a tank without heat. Most common are goldfish and guppies, but there are plenty available and you will be able to have a variety of fish that live in your cold water tank.
The supplies you need to configure your aquarium may seem lengthy, but it is actually a list much shorter and less expensive than a tank of water heated fresh or saltwater tank. Obviously the first thing you need is a tank. It's all personal choice here as they come in different sizes and shapes. When you buy the tank, a kit often comes with it and includes some of the other things you may need. Just to make sure, check that you have a filter and an air pump. These are the parts most important to the whole set up. If you buy your tank kit, make sure it is specified as a cold water set-up. You will notice that no heater is included.
After purchasing your aquarium, you can now consider how you want to decorate. Many types of gravel and sand are available in many colors. You can add accent plants as well to make it look more natural. Many people add little figures or signs to personalize their aquariums. That's all for you regarding the decorations. Be sure to buy a mosquito net, an algae scraper and conditioner for water.
If you choose to have a tank with lighting, which is ok, just be aware of the problems it may cause. Adding light to the tank, you also add heat. Algae thrives on heat. Although the light will not harm your tank, it may add to the growth of algae. It is not uncommon and is easily cleaned. Your fish will enjoy having the light, so it is probably better buy a hood that includes a light. Try to keep the tank out of direct sunlight when you choose its location within your home. It will also add to algae growth.
Once you've created your tank and the water is stabilized, you may add your fish. Sure to buy only cold water fish to add to this tank. If you do not know what types of fish are coldwater, ask for help to a pet. They will offer advice on additional types of fish you buy too. Once your fish are added, you'll have a beautiful scene underwater to enjoy for years to come. It is important to clean and take care of your tank on a regular basis. A thorough cleaning tank should be done every 2 months, including a change of water, scraping algae, rinsing the gravel filters waste and changing.
You will find that time passes, you will form a routing to take care of your cold water aquarium. It is worth the effort to maintain the reservoir because you'll be rewarded with a wonderful addition to your home.
